At the farm we have a female friendly cow called Connie! She is a Shorthorn and very well-behaved! The farm staff love to feed her a range of vegetables and she has a horse and donkey in the next field as company.

The milk we drink in Britain mainly comes from cows. cows store milk in their udder. Only a cow who has had a baby (calf), can produce milk. Milk is an important source of calcium and gives us healthy teeth and strong bones.

Some other food items you may recognize that we can make from cow’s milk are cheese, butter, yoghurt and ice cream.

Cows drink nearly a bathtub full of water everyday and with their 32 teeth and eat around 40 pounds of food a day!

Similar to the Shire Horse, as cows can also pull huge weight loads they have been used to help farmers by pulling ploughs and carts. Buffalo are still used for this purpose in many parts of the world.

In India, followers of the Hindu religion revere the cow as a symbol of life and source of vital dairy products so killing cows is not permitted. In other countries the cow is a symbol of wealth.

The cow has always been present around the world in various forms, such as bison in North America and buffalo in the Far East. What is certain is that Europeans first took domestic cattle to the Americas, causing devastation of the native breeds.
