Somewhere to go during the Olympics

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

As everyone will know by now, our wonderful armed services have been called up to cover for the shortages in security staff for the London Olympics as G4S were one or two people short, well around 18,000 actually, still who is counting.

So generous Old Macdonald issued a special invitation to the families of those from Colchester Barracks to come down for a free day out at the farm on July 25th, and hundreds of the family members came along. So here are some of the images of what was a great day out for everyone, in wonderful summer weather too! Just our way of saying thank you for their hard working in saving this country’s embarrassment and keeping us all safe, again!

We did organise a special day out for G4S staff too, but no one came! But if like the Army Families you are looking for somewhere to go during the Olympics, well here we are in Brentwood. The photos above include Major Jon White from 16th Airborne Brigade plus some of the families, and Councillor Ann Coe the Mayor of Brentwood plus the odd horse, owl and of course our staff!

Also, thought we would share with you our great day with Pip’s Puppets ( www.pipspuppets.com) whose great animal show enthralled the crowds on the farm on Saturday, whilst we bit our fingers wondering how Mark Cavendish was getting on! Oh dear, we know now. Never mind, lots more to come.

Get ahead of the crowds, visit our Owl in pics.

Want to get away from the London throngs, particularly around east London where there is some sports competition or other going on, and come to the next best place to London?

Well, owls are meant to be wise and our wonderful Owl family of Mum and Dad Snowy Owl plus their three chicks, know what is best and that is to rush down to Old Macdonald’s Farm.

See our Owls in pics if you like, or not, but for summer fun and a great day out with free parking, no traffic lanes out of bounds, and fresh air, fun and value for money, we are the place for you. And don’t you just love these photos…..taken at great risk by Ginek our keeper whilst feeding?

What a great sport he is, and so athletic! Everything rings true here!

Old Macdonald helps the Children’s Trust

Monday, July 16th, 2012

As you all know, or both of you who read this, Old Macdonald is a very generous man (well, so he says) and when he is not undertaking his favourite activities of counting his money or looking after his animals he often looks to find great charities and causes to support. That is why he is so pleased to have found the Children’s Trust and to offer them a special fund raising day here at Brentwood on August 19th.

The Children’s Trust is a national charity working with children who have multiple disabilities and complex health needs. They are based at a 24 acre site in Tadworth, Surrey but offer services to children from across the UK.

The combination of services offered by The Children’s Trust is unique. Every year they help hundreds of children and young people and their families from across the UK through a wide variety of services, and you can find out more by visiting www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk

Now on August 19th, as well as Old Mac’s Pet The Animals Day, you can enjoy workshops run by Debbie from Creation Station in Chelmsford who is coming to entertain you all and also a visit from their two bears, Tadworth and Barney who want to be petted by you too (Mind you, they look a bit dodgy to me!)

The Children’s Trust will have a stall and you can contribute to them too, whilst you have a great day at our Farm.

Avian News from Old Macdonald’s

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

Old Macdonald likes to watch the birdie, and last weekend he had a real treat. Not only did he welcome the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to your favourite fam, but he also admired the wonderful snowy owl chicks produced by his lovely pair of proud parents.

The RSPB had a stand and information officer in our outdoor stable for Saturday and Sunday, and whilst the first day was a bit damp (even the ducks said the weather was not nice) the Sunday was dry and warm, and crowds of visitors learnt a lot, and also made badges and spent time and we hope money supporting their work in the South Essex Marshes in particular.

Meanwhile our lovely and proud Snowy parents feed their chicks in our special aviary, and for everyone visiting do go and look because baby snowly owls are grey, and large and plump too, so go and look and see. Very soon they will have their full grown plumage.

Plus we dare not have a feature on Owls without showing off Annie our European Eagle Owl, here seen meeting the Mayor of Brentwood in 2011/12 Councillor Mrs Holmes on our Army Family Day and also with Major Jon White and then with some of the families from Colchester Barracks in July 2012.

So we are avian a great time on the farm (what a dreadful pun….apologies)

Update on Old Mac’s chosen charities

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

Being a benevolant bloke as you know, Old Macdonald supports a lot of excellent charities during the year, and has four permanent ones to back. These are Hopefield, the local Brentwood Animal Sanctuary, the Wildlife Heritage Trust in Kent who run the Big Cat Sanctuary, the World Land Trust who protect important areas in the world, and the Starlight Foundation who grant wishes to seriously ill children and their families. So he thought a quick update might be interesting to you.

First of all Starlight, who staged a wonderful family day for their contacts at the Honourable Artillery Club in central London on July 3rd. Now Old Macdonald is not really that honourable a sort of fellow but he sent along some of his wonderful inflatables for the children to enjoy and asked your favourite Mary Martin, who runs workshops at the farm during busy times, to attend as well. Here are some images for you to enjoy.

Next he visited the Wildlife Heritage Trust at the Big Cat Sanctuary, and they have just seen the birth of some very rare and important Sumatran Tiger Cubs. Old Mac did not visit them as they are too little to be disturbed, but took a couple of pictures of other big cats at the centre which is a wonderful place to visit.

Next is Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, and as you know if you read these pages often, over the past two years the Sanctuary lost Paula and Ernie Clark, the founders, who had dedicated their lives to rescuing animals. Fortunately Leona Lewis stepped in as a sponsor and she has done a remarkable job in raising funds and with a dedicated committee the future of Hopefield seems secure, so here is Leona as we needed an excuse to publish her photo!

Finally the World Land Trust, and Old Macdonald was pleased to meet members of that organisation at recent events and chat about their new project which is called Keepers of the Wild and aims to raise funds to support local people in the various countries as they take on the vital role of protecting not only species but also habitat, as habitat loss is the largest factor in extinction.

So Old Macdonald is really pleased to see all his chosen charities doing so well, and just wants to have another look at the Leona Lewis photo!
